Sidewall (England)
This is a sidewall. It was designed by A.W.N. Pugin and printed by William Woolams and Co. and decorated by John Gregory Crace. It is dated 1848 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is block-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Pugin sought inspiration from authentic Gothic sources and rendered all his designs without perspective. His designs for private commissions could be quite elaborate as seen in this example for Washington and Julia Hibbert at Bilton Grange,Warwickshire. Here, Pugin incorporates the couples monograms, along with crescents and ermine tails, into the design.
