Border (Italy), late 16th–early 17th century
This is a Border. It is dated late 16th–early 17th century and we acquired it in 1951. Its medium is linen and its technique is grid of laid cords with needle lace (reticella style); edge of punto in aria. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The looping of the tab edge was started on a heavy cord. The grid along the length is a narrow bobbin-made lace at the outer edges and two four-element braids at the inner edges of the guard stripes. The center pattern is divided into a square at two inch intervals by a cord covered with wrapping and the outer border into squares at 3/4 of an inch intervals.
