Band (France)
This is a Band. It is dated 1670–90 and we acquired it in 1950. Its medium is linen and its technique is mid to late 17th c raised needle lace. It is a part of the Textiles department.
As the century progressed the French industry became stronger and the Venetian weaker. The floral vine lost its vigor but gained new refinements in drawing and delicacy. Laces were used in ever increasing quantities and were now draped and gathered, so lightness was required. Up to now laces had been used flat.
