Band (Italy), 16th century

This is a Band. It is dated 16th century and we acquired it in 1949. Its medium is linen, silk and its technique is compound weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

First imported from the Islamic world, linen cloths and towels trimmed with sacred symbols became popular household objects in fifteenth-century Italy. Islamic motifs later merged with Gothic elements, such as castles, lions, fountains, dragons, and stags, frequently assuming a stylized nature.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Anonymous Donor.
