Print, Grotesque Ornament with Satyrs, from a set of twenty ornament panels

This is a Print. It was print maker: Agostino Veneziano and published by Antonio Salamanca. It is dated ca. 1530–1535 and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Veneziano was a prolific engraver, producing prints after designs by other artists. Here, slender scrolling vines and tendrils materialize from the mouth of a grotesque head and terminate in flowers from which animals illogically emerge. These designs are copied directly from Raphael and Giovanni da Udine. The delicate spirals form a gravitydefying framework for an antique vase, two satyrs, and other decorative elements.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
