Print, Ornament Panel Inscribed "Victoria Augusta"
This is a Print. It was print maker: Nicoletto da Modena and published by Antonio Salamanca. It is dated ca. 1507 and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is engraving on off white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In 1507, Nicoletto da Modena visited Nero’s Domus Aurea and inscribed his name on the wall. He then produced some of earliest identified engravings of grotesque designs. This series of four prints reflects the inspiration of his pilgrimage to the ancient ruin, as well as the work of fellow Renaissance artists. Nicoletto’s imagined beasts are distinctive. In the print on the lower left, the tails of spotted reptilian creatures emerge from the buds of flowers, whose stems coil into acanthus leaves that form the hair of a grotesque he ad. In the print on the lower right beasts with lion and human heads have body parts reminiscent of rams and horses, and bird-like claws. The monstrous creatures form the framework of a larger story that touches on themes of war, slavery, and peace, and may even be read as a history of the Roman Empire.
