Textile (France)
This is a Textile. It is dated ca. 1919 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is silk and its technique is supplementary warp pile (velvet), cut and voided, in satin foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Herman A. Elsberg (American, 1869–1938) was a highly esteemed collector and connoisseur of ancient and historic textiles; many of these he generously loaned to museums for special exhibitions. After his death in 1938, several American museums received bequests of important textiles from his collection. His passion for textiles wasn’t limited only to the ancient world. Elsberg also designed textiles for fashion and interiors and was the owner of a successful textile manufactory in Lyon, France. Around 1920, Elsberg designed and manufactured this intriguing textile: dark gold velvet in a staggered horizontal repeat of a stylized fox head showing the ears, eyes and snout in an ogival pattern.
