Sugar Bowl And Lid (England)
This is a Sugar bowl and lid. It was made by Wedgwood. It is dated late 18th century and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is stoneware (black basalt). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Josiah Wedgwood's black basaltes ware was all the rage in Britain at the height of the neo-classical period. The clean geometry of form and crisp regularity of decoration neatly rejected the naturalistic rococo. (Treasures from the Collection, 2003)
