Drawing, Six Studies of Thistles
This is a Drawing. It was created by Sophia L. Crownfield. It is dated early 20th century and we acquired it in 1937. Its medium is brush and watercolor on white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In pencil and ink (far left), Crownfield’s seemingly simple line drawing shows how she explored the structure of the bristly heads and prickly leaves of the thistle plant. In the center, she filled the sheet with several watercolor studies of thistles, many with curved stems, which seemed to inform her final design for the textile below.
