Drawing, Study of Thistles
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Sophia L. Crownfield. It is dated ca. 1890 and we acquired it in 1937. Its medium is brush and oil on black paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
English designers like William Morris (1836– 1896) and his contemporaries often used a boldly stylized version of the thistle plant in their designs for textiles and wallpaper. Crownfield’s treatment of thistles (left) shows a freer, yet realistic treatment of this plant form, which carries over into her printed Cheney silk (center) of orange thistle flowers on olive green stems.
