Drawing, Study of Irises
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Sophia L. Crownfield. It is dated early 20th century and we acquired it in 1937. Its medium is pen and ink, graphite and watercolor on yellow tracing paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
For this iris study, Crownfield selected the bearded variety, using delicate flicks of white gouache and ink to depict the rows of hairs that direct insect pollinators to the flower’s center. A notation marked “A” at the bottom reads “lower petal held up by stable flower in background.” The two flowers closest to the bottom edge each have an “A” noting the area where Crownfield carefully observed how the petals were supported by the surrounding blossoms.
