Pleated Fan (France), ca. 1840

This is a Pleated fan. It is dated ca. 1840 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is paper and parchment leaf with hand-colored lithograph, carved, painted and gilded mother-of-pearl sticks. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The narrow leaf and elaborate sticks of this fan indicate that it was probably intended for the South American market.

This object was bequest of Sarah Cooper Hewitt. It is credited Bequest of Sarah Cooper Hewitt.
