Sidewall, Tablett (Little Table)
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Josef Hillerbrand. It is dated 1927–30 and we acquired it in 1930. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This paper was most likely intended for use in a women’s bedroom or boudoir. Wallpapers were not yet washable at this time so would probably not have been intended for a bath or washroom. The design consists of a pair of shelves as viewed through a glass case or with a cable suspension supporting the front of the shelves. The shelves contain a variety of objects including flasks, boxes, vase and what appears to be a half-eaten apple. Whether this is a sculptural piece or a real apple, and whether it references some religious or mythological icon, or merely suggests someone is using this “space”, is unknown.
It is credited Gift of Frankl Galleries.
