Handscreen, 1751–1774

This is a Handscreen. It is dated 1751–1774 and we acquired it in 1927. Its medium is engraved, hand-colored, and painted paper leaf, turned wood handle. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This fan commemorates Louis XV’s decision to found a military academy for cadet officers from poor noble families. The edict was signed on 13 January 1751 and the building was to be sited near the Invalides, Paris. The fan’s text praises the king for not resting idly on his laurels and reminds the reader that gratitude is worthy of sacrifice.

It is inscribed

Printed on obverse, at bottom (partially concealed) : Paris chez Petite Rue de Petit Pont a l’Linage Notre Dame No. 12.
