Mustard Pot with Birds Mustard Pot

This is a Mustard pot. It was made by Richard Hennell. It is dated 1735 and we acquired it in 1926. Its medium is silver, glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Mustard was manufactured commerically for the first time in the 1720's in England. It was served in elegant, hand-crafted small pots at formal tables. (Tools for the Table, 1993).

This object was bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane.

H x W x D: 7.1 x 8.5 x 5.9 cm (2 13/16 x 3 3/8 x 2 5/16 in.)

It has the following markings

On exterior decorative foliage near the handle: [1] “R•” [partial mark], impressed (maker’s mark) [2] Lion passant, impressed (standard mark, English) [3] Crowned leopard’s head, impressed (town mark, London, 1478–1822) [4] “V”, impressed (date letter, 1735) On the underside of lid: [1] Lion passant, impressed (standard mark, English)
