Gaming Purse (Italy)
This is a Gaming purse. It is dated 17th century and we acquired it in 1926. Its medium is silk, metallic yarns and its technique is embroidered in metallic yarns on supplementary warp pile (velvet), satin lining. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Wealthy men and women were expected to be skilled participants at the card table, and gambling was a natural extension of this socially acceptable pastime. While the rich materials used for this gaming purse show the impressive wealth of its owner, people often incurred ruinous debts at the card table.
