Print, REPRESENTATION DE L’ARRIVÉE DE SA MAJESTÉ LOUIS XV EN LA VILLE DE STRASBOURG Le 5. Octobre 1744 par la Route et Porte de Saverne
This is a Print. It was designed by Johann Martin Weis and print maker: Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. It is dated 1745 and we acquired it in 1920. Its medium is etching and engraving on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In an effort to encourage his army which was engaged in a long struggle over Austrian territories, Louis XV journeyed to Metz, near the battle area. He became severely ill there, and it was thought that he would not recover. He did, however, and upon his recovery the announcement was made that he would visit the city of Strasbourg on his way back to Paris. A sumptuous series of events – banquets, fire works, a tournament on the river, and illuminations were prepared in record time, along with a grandiose arch for his entry into the city. Illustrations in the commemorative volume are by the court engraver, Philippe Le Bas.
