Inscribed in graphite, at top left: this champan presented a / fine effect at late twilight. The fogon / or fireplace in the bow of the boat was / in use and a bright flame with the illum- / inated figures gave great life in contrast / to the cool hues of evening.; at top right: fogon; at bottom right: champan.
