Drawing, Green River, Wyoming Territory, 1879
This is a Drawing. It was created by Thomas Moran. It is dated 1879 and we acquired it in 1917. Its medium is brush and watercolor, white gouache, graphite on tan wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In the 1870s, the area of the Green River shown here was the starting point for excursions up into Yellowstone and down through Utah to the Grand Canyon. Green River was a key location on the way to Promontory Point, Utah, where the Union Pacific connected with the Central Pacific Railroad, creating the first transcontinental railway line in 1869. While Moran first visited the region in 1871 to join Hayden’s expedition to the Yellowstone, he executed this drawing during an excursion commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad. Moran deliberately edited the effects of industry, including the railyards, from this drawing. Its depiction of the high drama of the russet-and yellow-colored bluffs served as the basis for larger compositions of the same region.
