Manufacturer's Sample Book (France)
This is a Manufacturer's sample book. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1914. Its medium is paper, cardboard, silk, metal-wrapped silk cord, metal foil and its technique is warp-float face with supplementary warp and weft patterning. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Court costume was reintroduced in France under Napoleon, and this sample book of elaborate trimmings shows the influence of military costume on formal fashion during the First Empire (1804-14). Metallic trims and heavy braids were seen as an affirmation of power and expression of official style, both for clothing and interiors.
