Tunic Fragment With Clavus Bands (Egypt)
This is a Tunic fragment with clavus bands. It is dated 5th–6th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is warp: s-spun, z-twisted 2-ply linen; wefts: s-spun linen, s-spun wool and its technique is plain weave with discontinuous wefts (slit tapestry), with supplementary weft wrapping. It is a part of the Textiles department.
During the Byzantine period (ca. 330 – 1453), Egyptians often decorated their plain linen garments with colorful, woven-wool ornaments. Most common among these were orbiculi (roundels on the shoulders and abdomen), segmenta (ornamental squares in the same places), and clavi (vertical bands running from the inner shoulders past the breasts), as seen here.
