Drawing, Retreat of the Turks after the Siege of Vienna, 1529

This is a Drawing. It was created by Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus. It is dated 1589 and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is recto: pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash over black chalk on laid paper verso: pen and brown ink over black chalk on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Binding Evidence: Sixteen irregularly spaced stitching holes run along the bottom edge of the sheet.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors.

1901-39-2656v Inscription: nō(n) ano mosso ancora el teste E vogliano domandare Licentia al S.or p[o?] virgine - E predendano avere La dotta della moglie di Cossimo e le [chi?] n?ienti della figliola se V S sapete chi mori prima Cossimo o vostra padra se mori prima cosimo nō(n) podeva eridare Translation: “still have not moved the testimony and they want to ask permission from the Signore [?] virgin – and [probably: they claim] to have the [possibly: ‘permission’] of the wife of Cosimo and the [?] [?] of the daughter if Your Lordship knows who died first Cosimo or your father if Cosimo died first they would not be able to inherit”
