Drawing, Hunting Panthers using Human Excrement

This is a Drawing. It was created by Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus and published by Philips Galle and engraved by Hans Collaert II and subject: Pliny the Elder. It is dated 1596 or before and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors.

Recto, inscribed in pen and ink: "pastori coperti/da fraschi da/lontane /in asia plinea" Verso, inscribed in pen and ink: "Legonsi in un vaso as un altro albero gli escrementi sterco/delli huomini a le panthere come tighere ne sono tanto arcide che non gli potendo arrivare o amazzano col saltare per/avergli, Lbo. 8 cap. 27. Plinio."
