Textile, Tarte
This is a Textile. It was designed by Akira Minagawa and made for minä perhonen. It is dated 2006 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is foundation 100% wool; embroidery 60% acrylic, 40% wool and its technique is embroidered on double cloth with overtwisted yarns. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Akira Minagawa is best known as a fashion designer, but has also created textiles, illustrated books, exhibitions, and immersive installations. His design process always begins with drawing -- a practice of visual storytelling which informs all of his designs. This richly detailed design was inspired by rows of colorful tarts in a pastry shop window. Tarte uses raised embroidered dots to create the “crust,” while the filling is made up of a scattering of small crosses, like hatch marks.
