Picture
This is a Picture. It was manufactured by Anderson Brothers Silk Company (Paterson, NJ, USA) and subject: Betsy Ross. It is dated 1904 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is silk and its technique is jacquard woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Title:
This woven picture of a seated Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag was made at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition or as it was commonly known, the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904. Made by the Anderson Brothers Silk Company of Paterson, New Jersey, the original piece had on the left side a calendar with the first six months of 1905 and on the right, the remaining six months of the year. When completed, the woven souvenir was placed in a window mat stamped on the bottom with the following: “Woven in Pure Silk at Louisiana Purchase Exposition St. Louis 1904.” That this souvenir picture was a popular one for Anderson Brothers can be seen in the trade literature of the early twentieth century. The trade journal Silk reported that the Anderson Brothers brought a loom to the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition where they did a live demonstration on their equipment, weaving the same souvenir picture of Betsy Ross stitching the American flag.
While this example is missing its calendar from both sides, it is a well-documented example of a woven commemorative from the once-renowned "Silk City" of Paterson, New Jersey.
