Textile, Egyptienne
This is a Textile. It was designed by Lamartine Le Goullon and manufactured by M. Lowenstein & Sons, Inc. and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Egyptienne, Lamartine Le Goullon’s hieroglyphic-inspired design, was produced in multiple colorways. In this version, wavy bands of yellow and orange provide a backdrop for Egyptian-esque figures in black and white. Sportswear company Catalina released several womenswear pieces in 1955 using Egyptienne in its various colorways, including a swimsuit, dress, and skirt. (1)
Another design by Le Goullon, entitled Futuriste (5826.45.2016), and a Catalina swimsuit fashioned from Le Goullon’s Sudan print are part of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art’s traveling exhibition, “Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000.”
