Textile, Pin-Ups

This is a Textile. It was designed by Louise Phillips and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1953 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Pin-Ups is the work of Louise Phillips, an illustrator of book covers and advertising artwork. In this cleverly named creation, stylized flowers in turquoise, coral, yellow, and fuchsia are straight-pinned onto a tan background, reminiscent of kraft paper. The strewn-about blossoms have a flat appearance, like paper cut-outs themselves, but subtle shadows lift them off the surface of the fabric for a three-dimensional effect.
This design in this colorway is currently represented in the museum’s collection (1994-38-7).
American Weekly Pattern designed a women’s sundress using a blue version of this textile and featured it in newspaper advertisements in March of 1954. (1)
Phillips’ best-known textile design, Calory Chart, is also presented for consideration in two colorways (5826.44.2016 and 5826.60.2016).
