Textile, Feathery Stripe, 1954
This is a Textile. It was designed by Roger Chapin and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
In a departure from the figurative depictions that adorn the bulk of the Associated American Artists textiles, Roger Chapin’s designs are a bit more abstracted. In Feathery Stripe, whiskery white lines traverse a background of muted pastels applied in a marbleized effect.
This design in this colorway is currently represented in the museum’s collection: Textile, Feathery Stripe, 1954 (1994-38-4). One additional Chapin textile, Glacial Imprint (1994-38-15), is also included in the museum’s collection.
Chapin’s other textile designs for Associated American Artists, Glacial Imprint and Mad Tweed, were used in designs by Vogue Patterns and Junior Sophisticates. (1)
