Textile, Egyptienne
This is a Textile. It was designed by Lamartine Le Goullon and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Egyptienne was created by Lamartine Le Goullon, the illustrator responsible for the branding and interiors of two famed San Francisco jazz clubs. Signature Fabrics produced the design in multiple colorways. Here, wavy bands of turquoise, blue, and navy provide a backdrop for hieroglyphic-inspired figures in black and white.
"Le Goullon's design of Egyptian motifs is pretty near authentic to tomb engravings depicting family life," declared Women's Wear Daily upon the fabric's release. (1)
The following year, sportswear company Catalina produced several womenswear pieces, including a swimsuit, dress, and skirt, using Egyptienne in its various colorways. (2)
