Sample Book Page, Mural Scrolls
This is a Sample book page. It was created by Henri Matisse and manufactured by Katzenbach and Warren, Inc.. It is dated 1948 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is screen printed on canvas. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Matisse was inspired by the primitive forms of traditional African sculpture early in the twentieth century, resulting in a stylized rendering of forms, often with unique perspectives. During the last years of his life Matisse began creating compositions of paper cutouts which again utilized crude shapes with a flat perspective but painted in bold colors. This mural design emulates his cutout works.
