American jazz had become very popular in Europe by the 1930s, and the Quintette of the Hot Club of France is a pivotal ensemble from the time period. With violinist Stephane Grappelli and guitarist Django Reinhardt, the ensemble was capable of performing highly energetic music. Reinhardt’s guitar playing on “Dinah” is at times a whirlwind, highly evocative of Lalique’s vase. Text by James Saltzman, Faculty, Manhattan School of Music
