Joseph Stella’s oil painting of the Brooklyn Bridge is captivating and somewhat avant-garde for the time period. Coincidentally, “Weather Bird” by Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines was deemed to be too avant-garde by record executives. It was recorded on December 5, 1928, but was not released until 1930 for that reason! The work is an illuminating conversation between two master musicians that is simultaneously loose, free, and swinging. Text by James Saltzman, Faculty, Manhattan School of Music
