Jacob Best’s brewing company (first The Empire Brewery, then Best and Company), founded in 1844, became Pabst Brewing Company in 1889. Frederick Pabst was Best’s son-in-law, and moved the company from Chicago to Milwaukee after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Pabst has been in operation since its founding, purportedly winning a blue ribbon at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition for best American brewery, giving title to one of their best-known beers, Pabst Blue Ribbon.
