Cooper Hewitt says...
Halima Aden (born September 19, 1997) is a Somali American humanitarian and former fashion model. Born in a refugee camp in Kenya, she moved with her family to St. Cloud, Minnesota at the age of six. Aden was a good student and with the support of her teachers, she overcame the racism that accompanied her adoption of the hijab. The potential to earn college scholarship money encouraged her to enter the Miss Minnesota USA pageant where she was the first to wear a hijab and burkini in that state’s competition. Following her participation in the pageant where she was a semi-finalist, Aden received national attention and was signed to IMG Models. A series of high-profile opportunities soon followed. She was photographed for the cover of Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and appeared on the covers of Vogue Arabia and Allure Magazine wearing a hijab. She has used her platform to redefine traditional standards of beauty and give Muslim women more visibility. In March 2019, Aden announced her collaboration with Modanisa on the design of a collection of twenty-seven headpieces, including headscarves and turbans, to debut at Istanbul Modest Fashion Week.
