Adolphe Appian
Adolphe Appian, born in Lyon as Jacques Barthelemy Adolphe Appian in 1818, was a prominent painter, etcher, and graphic designer. After he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853, he befriended Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. Corot and Daubigny visibly influenced his style as he transitioned from atmospheric, monochromatic images to a brighter, more shocking color palette. His customers included Napoleon III and Princess Mathilde, and he was inducted into the Legion of Honour, the highest French order of merit. While he painted many colorful works, he never stopped making charcoal drawings as well. His landscape etchings fall under the Barbizon style.
