Born in Nuremberg, Erhard Schön was a German painter and woodcut designer. A prolific printmaker, his work was heavily influenced by that of Albrecht Dürer. Around 1200 illustrations for 116 books, in addition to 200 separate woodcuts have been attributed to Schön. The books he illustrated were mainly religious in nature. In the 1520s he produced some works criticizing Catholicism in favor of Lutheranism, expanding his oeuvre to include satirical, secular, and classical subjects.
