Richard Hess, though an aspiring painter, regularly worked as advertising art director, graphic designer, magazine art director, and illustrator, producing a very broad spectrum of work. He worked at advertising agencies such as J. Walter Thompson; N.W. Ayer; Benton & Bowles; and Fletcher, Richards, Calkins & Holden before opening his own design office in New York in 1966.
