Maria Vera Brunner-Frieberger

Like many talented women of the early twentieth century who were barred from the Academy based on gender, Brunner studied at the Art School for Women and Girls in Vienna (Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen). In 1908, at age twenty-three, she participated in the famous 1908 Vienna Kunstschau organized by Gustav Klimt, exhibiting a woodcut, Stadtturm (Tower), and a wooden toy set (figures and a house). In 1909, when Egon Schiele and his circle left the Academy, he staged an independent exhibition inaugurating his new circle called the Neukunstgruppe (New Art Group).
