Kowaliska studied in Berlin and graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1927. She looked to folk art as inspiration after moving to Vietri sul Mare, Italy, to join an artist group called the “Germans of Vietri,” considered to have been responsible for reviving Vietri pottery. In 1956 she moved to Rome and launched a new career in icon painting on glass and collage.
