Pettit was best known for the books she published about art, fabrics crafts and textiles. She produced hand block-printed fabrics. She was a founding member of the Connecticut Comission on the Arts, member of the Society of Connecticut Craftsmen, the American Craftsmen's Council, and the Brookfield Craft Center.
