Edward Lamson Henry was born in Charleston, South Carolina; at the age of seven, he was brought to live with relatives in New York. He began studying art at fourteen with Walter Oddie (1808–1865), a landscape painter and early member of the National Academy of Design. Henry furthered his study with Paul Weber (1823–1916) at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Paris as a student of Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury (1797–1890) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He later traveled through Rome and Florence. In 1859, Henry began exhibiting yearly at the National Academy of Design; two years later he received the status of full Academician.
