Prince Rupert was an exiled German nobleman and amateur printmaker who worked in the Netherlands and co-invented the mezzotint technique with Ludwig von Siegen of Amsterdam. The development of a new tool, the rocker, allowed the surface of a plate to be roughened uniformly, producing a rich dark ground that was burnished to achieve the highlights of a composition.
