Berta started weaving as an occupational therapist. She was born in Texas, and moved to New York after WWI. She worked in the textile industry and opened up her own design studio where she also taught weaving. She formed the New York Guild of Handweavers (1940). She is the author of Designing and Drafting for Handweavers: basic principles of cloth construction.
