Jérôme-François Chantereau

A relatively unknown artist, Chantereau was a member of the Academie de Saint-Luc, and in Paris, was active as a picture dealer. Among his commisiond works are five executed for the King of Denmark, Christian VII. Forty drawings by Chantereau have been identified; roughly one-quarter of these were acquired by Count Tessin on his second trip to Paris (1739-42). Chantereau is notorius for killing Joseph-Ferdinand Godefroy, a paintings restorer, in a duel in 1741.
