Gaetano Lodi was active in Bologna in the late 1850s as a designer of ceramics. He worked later in Florence as well as Turin as a painter of interior decorations in the Real Casa, the residence of the royal house of Savoy. In 1867, he was called to Paris by Paul Boudry, superintendent of decorations for the Opera, but he left after of few months to work in Milan. In 1873, Lodi was engaged by Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt as a designer of interior decorations in the royal palace in Giza, Cairo, which included designs for the Khedival table service.
