Thomas Snell
A house painter, Thomas Snell donated his services to the Cooper Union for 72 years (attributing his longevity and health, in part, to vegetarianism). He was invited to join the museum’s select Council alongside J. P. Morgan, Charles W. Gould, and others from New York wealthy elite. Never married, he explained that “Cooper Union is my wife, and her students my children”; this he demonstrated in his will with a $1 million bequest to Cooper Union.
