Born in Passaic, New Jersey on January 2, 1938 as Robert Irving Smithson. Education: Art Students' League, New York, 1953; Brooklyn Museum, New York, 1956. Joined Army Reserve Force in 1956. Known as an Earth Sculptor, he purchased an island off of Maine and a site in Utah in 1971–72. Lecturer in painting at Police Athletic League, New York, 1959; Visiting Lecturer at University of New Mexico, Alburquerque, 1973. Recipient: Art Institute of Chicago Award, 1972. Died in airplane crash in Amarillo, Texas on July 20, 1973.
