Robert Bonfils (French, 1886 – 1972) was a prolific illustrator and designer. He studied decorative arts, and his work was exhibited regularly at the Société des Artistes Décorateurs beginning in 1912. He was perhaps best known for his fashion illustrations for the Gazette du Bon Ton and Modes et Manières d’Aujourd’hui. He also contributed to Arts et Métiers Graphiques, and was commissioned to create the cover for the catalogue of the enormously influential 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. He also studied bookbinding, and created both plates and covers for many beautiful volumes in the 1920s. From 1920 – 39 he provided textile designs to the prestigious Lyon silk firm Bianchini-Férier, and also created graphic designs for the firm’s advertising. He continued to work in graphic and book design into the 1960s, while also serving on the faculty of the École Estienne in Paris for thirty-two years.
