Texas Instruments was not formally created until 1954, but its origins date back to 1930 with the formation of Geophysical Service Incorporated, an oil and gas company that worked on signaling technologies for the Army and Navy. In 1946, the company created its electronics lab and manufacturing unit which would eventually lead to the creation of the silicon semiconductor in 1954, an invention which made Texas Instruments globally recognized. The company’s work has expanded greatly to include digital technology. In 1967, Texas Instruments created the first electronic handheld calculator, and in 1990, with the unveiling of the TI-81 calculator, they became a major leader in the graphic calculator industry. Their recent work has involved developing chips which make cellphone technology cheaper and quicker. The company has grown to include over 30,000 employees with almost 100,000 products to its name.
