Sara Hendren (American, b. 1973) is an artist, design researcher, and writer focused on disability rights and inclusive design. She is an Assistant Professor at Olin College, where she recently launched the Adaptation + Ability Group dedicated to making adaptive and assistive tools with client-collaborators. Hendren is the principal investigator of “Sketch Model: Cultural and Technological Pathways for a Complex Future,” a three-year program (2017-2020) at Olin College funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. She runs Abler, a website investigating the relationship of technology and the human body. Her first book, "Shoe, Scissor, Sidewalk: Disability and the Unlikely Origins of Everyday Things," is forthcoming (2019) from Riverhead Books and will explore how disability is at the core of design. She co-founded the Accessible Icon Project with Brian Glenney and Tim Ferguson-Sauder to promote a new, more active version of the International Symbol of Access available for free in the public domain. Hendren graduated with a Masters in Design Studies from Harvard School of Design and has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design.
